It is quite straightforward and does not require any steep climbs or descents. However, there is a fair amount of road and tarmaced-lane walking, but the roads are quiet and these surfaces make the hiking faster.
The stretch between Hampsthwaite and Haxby packhorse bridge provides very tranquil walking alongside the River Nidd. This is the highlight of the tour.
There is also a bridge over the Nidd at Hampsthwaite which dates back to the 16th century. There is a mediaeval track leading from the church there to the main road.
Bluebells and wild garlic were coming into bloom along the route; wild garlic near Birstwith and lots of bluebells near Ripley; in a week or two, the bluebells should be in full bloom, providing a beautiful spectacle.
