Monastiraki to Thripti to Karvousi passing by Ha Gorge.
A long climb of 10 Kms before reaching the highest point before a steep descent of 5Kms down to Karvousi.
A Return car parked at Karvousi near the Church of Ag Georgios is required to bring walkers back to their cars parked at the start.
The walk is hard underfoot going through all types of terrain, Tarmac roads, concrete pathways, unstable shale, pathways through woods and old rock pathways.
Certainly not for the unfit.
Although the walk intercepts the A4 it does also go off that route and the pathways are not always marked, especially going up.
The walk takes you through the village of Thripti following the A4 almost all the way from there to Karvousi.
From car park head towards the village and turn left up some stairs towards the Tavernas
From car park head towards the village on the nice paved pathway.
Turn left and go up stairs where the Taverna's are
Pass by Taverna and keep left going up.
(Neat sign outside Taverna doorway).
When you get to the large unmade road turn right and follow for approx 2Kms
Photo of pathway
Continue to top and turn right
E4 sign takes you off the road and onto the narrow bush trail
Narrow track, but easy to follow
Trail leads onto rougher patch with slippery shale underfoot
Very slippery underfoot going up this area
Path firms up and widens still rocky underfoot
Easy to follow and great views
Path runs close to the edge, but offers great views
Path more softer underfoot
Path still narrow but well trodden
Entering softer underfoot trail as heading into wooded area
Sign to mark trail
View to your left from time to time you can see the Ha gorge
Looking down on trail from roadway
Followed roadway for next 5 Kms
Stopped here for a water break after continuous climb up the winding roadway
Pass to the left of the church to continue walk
Continue on up the wide road track
Keep to the left when you hit the next junction
Easy roadway path, just continue going up
Not the best day for it, but photo looking back at the Ha Gorge
Back onto E4 signage road.
Continue left up to Village
Head into village to the small triangular opening and keep left then right by the wall onto path through village and past the Taverna
Follow pathway through the village buildings
Pass taverna and stay on pathway passing passing many buildings keep to the right at junction 300 metres further on
Turn right and go down staircase onto rough track that leads onto dirt track that goes up and follows E4 trail again
pathway continues going up zigzagging up to the highest point of the walk.
Keep to the left by the fence and keep left at the next turn off, we are back on the E4 trail and there is signage along the path
View before the descend finally starts.
Karvousi can be seen at the base of the valley view, along with the pathway that you will be following
Trail now descends from here on wards.
The path is mostly rocky single lane winding it's way down fairly steeply all the way to Karvousi
Mud / dirt trail to follow down before continuing onto a rocky underfoot pathway
Where you are heading.
Pathway is visible to the left that you will be taking to get down.
View of pathway that you are following
Steep and long 4Km walk down to finish
Pretty tough on your legs by now.
Soon to enter the stony / rocky bit that will be the main pathway to the end.
Very easy to follow trail, this part has a low rock wall to your right
View of pathway and stunning scenery
Shows pathway (middle area) as it winds down
Enter a roadway and almost within a few meters turn right by the sign and follow the dirt track down, staying on this track as it crosses over several concrete roads
Follow well trodden track straight across the concrete road a little further on
Pass ruined building to your right
Intersect a concrete roadway and continue on until you see sign to your right taking you off the back onto the E4 with signage and red dots on stones.
Easy track to follow.
An Aquaduct system runs along the pathway which you pass over. You will see more of it as you continue down along with the usual black pipes.
Go straight across the road keeping to the trail
Markers on roadway to show pathway continuation
Last photo here.
Turn left at end of path here then right again, signage is here and follow pathway again.
Turn off right again across the concrete road again pass a large water reservoir concrete tank to your right
The path widens out now as you enter Karvousi, continue going straight ahead through the village houses until you come to the large central church of Ag Georgios where hopefully you will have parked your commute car to transport the walkers back to their cars at Monastiraki
